If Your Influence Comes from Your Title, Then You Have No Influence

There’s a certain kind of leadership that only works when someone’s watching — the kind that needs a title, a team, and a signature at the bottom of the org chart to matter.

But here’s the truth: if your influence depends on your title, it disappears the moment your title does.

Real influence doesn’t come from hierarchy. It comes from credibility, consistency, and connection.

I’ve worked with enough organizations — from agriculture and manufacturing to tech and marketing — to see that the most respected people usually aren’t the ones leading the meetings. They’re the ones people go to when things fall apart. They don’t need authority to have impact; they’ve earned it through who they are and how they show up.

Authority gives you compliance. Influence gives you commitment.

That’s the difference between someone who can make people follow directions and someone who inspires belief in the direction itself.

The best leaders I’ve seen could lose the title tomorrow and their influence wouldn’t fade — because it wasn’t built on position. It was built on trust.

Genuine influence transcends:
• Titles – People remember your integrity, not your job description.
• Projects – The lessons you leave behind live on in how others lead.
• Companies – When your name still shows up in conversations years later… that’s real influence.

Leadership without a title is the ultimate test.

Take away the office, the org chart, and the authority — what’s left?
If people still seek you out for perspective, clarity, or truth, that’s leadership.

That’s the kind of influence I’ve always aimed for, and the kind I help others build: the kind that lasts longer than any title ever could.
